Making "anime-style" figures at home?

I know most of these figures are built with plastic, is there a way to work with plastic at home? If not, what other material can I use to get this look? How do I make them and where can I buy the supplies?

example figures:

  1. try getting the shape you want with clay, then carve it on to wood. or soap. those are very pretty! <3

  2. I would first practice with some type of clay, such as Sculpey clay.

Here are some images that are made out of Sculpey:

    Good luck!

  3. Most of that seems to be 3-D cartoon of a Japanese style.  But, you might be able to make similar looking models.  Go to Joann Fabric Store or a hobby store.  They have colored polymer clay type materials that you can mold.  I think you can bake them afterward so they become hard.  They even have flesh tones so I really think you could pull this off with some creativity
