  1. Hmmmmm....I've been eating homemade tamales all my life, and have never seen any made without the corn husks. But I would imagine you could use foil or parchment paper.

  2. you can use banana leaves. but if you can find those you should be able to find th corn husks... look for a market called Super H mart or look in your latin section of town...  good luck.

  3. NO NO NO, you don't have to use corn husk to make tamales, in fact I think it dries them out. My favorite way to eat tamales is cooked in banana leaves. Every time I visit my Mami y Papi in San Luis Potosi she makes me tamales cooked with banana leaves they are the best!!! In the US you can find them in some Mexican stores or ethnic specialty food stores. Simply just shave off the center of the leaf to make it more flexible and wrap the same way as you do the corn husk. Plus when I make tamales I find it easier to wrap them in bananas than in the small corn husk. Try it and I hope you like it.

  4. You could try fresh corn husks if you don't have the dry ones.

Also, you could put half the dough in a greased pyrex, then the filling, and cover it with the rest of the dough and put it in the oven covered with foil until a knife comes out clean.

Also you could use a super clean terry cloth to prepare the tamal, steam it and serve it (it is called tamalon)

  5. You can use foil paper instead of corn husks.

  6. you can use banana leaves(they are green).it gives them a unique but delicious flavoring

  7. Making tamales calls for corn husks, or banana leaves. You buy them before you start making tamales.

Oh, and a word of advice. I used to follow the traditional method of spreading the tamale masa onto the husk with a spoon. I found this neat item called a Mas Tamal Masa Spreader. Look for it on internet, because it is the neatest gadget you can get for your kitchen.

  8. The can ones are made with some kind of paper, but it's realy thin. I would wait tell I had the corn husk.

  9. I would use corn husks too, but foil would be my next choice, then muslin.

  10. Go to eBay and type 'corn husks' Don't know how many you need. There are sellers with small amounts and ones with lots.

If you Google that same set of words you'll find sellers also,

  11. Don't bother with so much expense and trouble without the leaves. It gives it flavor. Don't they have dried leaves at the store?
