Question:

Making vegan icing- substitute for margarine?

I'm trying to make the icing recipe found here-

http://vegetarian.about.com/od/desertrecipes/r/vanillafrosting.htm

However, I do not have vegan margarine.

Are there any easy to find substitutes, maybe an oil or something?

  1. Shortening is usually the easiest on-hand substitute.  You can also use coconut oil, although it might alter the flavor a little.

  2. The best substitue I've found is Blue Bonnet Lite margarine. I've tried Smart Balance and it's awful, and costs about three times as much!

  3. Oh this one is totally easy- Earth Balance Natural Buttery Spread. Works like a charm and you can find it in most major grocery chains. It's 100% vegan.

  4. Earth Balance, Pure, Shortening, Vegetble oils

  5. im sure if you search for a different recipe, you can find one without margerine.  i made a cake yesterday  with vegan chocolate icing that had no margerine in it.
