Mal Meninga's proposed four-year extension still undecided with Queensland Rugby League
While talking to reporters on Tuesday, October 18, Queensland Rugby League (QRL) chief executive, Robert Moore, said that the decision about the State of Origin’s coach, Mal Meninga’s extension is yet to be made by the QRL board.
Meninga has been at his current position for the last six years and has steered his side to their sixth successive title victory earlier this year.
State Origins’ most successful coach had asked for an extension of contract for four years, however, the case is still pending with QRL because the board does not wish to overload the coach, without precisely defining his new role. It is expected that they will give a decision about his extension by Friday, November 11, when QRL’s next board meeting is scheduled to take place.
While speaking about the in-house situation pertaining to the future of rugby league, Moore said, "I've spoken to Mal today (Tuesday) and we've just got to work through the finer details. There's no dramas. I hope he'll still be coaching Queensland. That's never really been in question. It's more the other areas we want to be clear on."
Meninga's coaching contract expired this year but since Queensland has enjoyed a successful stint under him, this catch will not be easily to let go off. His record reveals that he has played 34 games for Origins so far.
Moore, who himself is new to the job at Queensland, acknowledged that there are hardly any disagreements between the long time coach and him, which is another plus point.
While speaking about Meninga’s inclination towards leadership, coaching and staff development and player identification, Moore acknowledged that they have had detailed discussions on matters that will extend the life of the programmes at Origins.
He further added, “The critical thing for us, and Mal recognises it, is that our pool of players for Origin is quite small compared to New South Wales, so the way we administer our programs has to be top notch to make sure all the things we do are leading edge."
