Vyacheslav Malafeev has urged Zenit St. Petersburg to get back on track after their latest defeat in the UEFA Champions League and has praised Christian Abbiati
Zenit St. Petersburg trimmed their chances to progress from the UEFA Champions League group stages after recording their second defeat of the ongoing competition.
The St. Petersburg club suffered a 3-2 defeat in the second group stage match against AC Milan after losing out to Malaga CF last month. Zenit, meanwhile, ended their terrific streak of remaining unbeaten in 16 home games in the
European competition.
As things stand, Zenit are at the bottom-spot on their group table and trail the table-toppers, Malaga, by six points.
However, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Vyacheslav-Malafeev-c36502 still believes that the defending Russian Premier League champions can progress from the group stages of the tournament if they improve defensively.
The fact that Zenit have conceded six goals in the opening two group stages this term disappoints the Russian goalkeeper, who has lamented the situation and urged his team-mates to alter the situation in the remaining matches of
the tournament.
“I think this defeat is a result of the past games, which we have failed to win and were unable to score points. Over the years we have played a very stable but I must admit that we are lacking confidence at the moment.”
“We all need to do a little more to help ourselves. We tried to play offensively and created some chances after coming from behind but the visitors hold back well to stop our attacks. I think we are moving in the right direction.
I think things will change sooner or later.” He was quoted as saying.
Luciano Spalletti’s men take on the Italian outfit on the back of a 1-1 draw against Lokomotiv Moscow at home. Malafeev revealed that they were unlucky not to claim all three points from the match.
And while most of the football pundits have discarded Zenit’s chances to progress after a slow start, Malafeev insisted that they have to take maximum points from the remaining fixtures to ensure their progress.
Malafeev went on to hail http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Christian-Abbiati-c9046, saying that they would have defeated the Milan-based club had they not played the Italian shot-stopper.
