Malaysia Open GP Gold: Busanan Ongbumrungpan grabs Women’s Singles title to steal the limelight
Thailand’s Busanan Ongbumrungpan surprised everyone when she stole the limelight by grabbing the Women’s Singles title at the 2012 Malaysia Open GP Gold 2012 at Johor Bahru, Malaysia, on Sunday, May 6.
The un-seeded Busanan put up gutsy performance and toppled her Japanese opponent Sayaka Takahashi in the Women’s Singles final of the event and bagged her first ever title in a GP Gold event.
The Thai shuttler was in her prime form as she did not drop any set in the final contest and wrapped the title by ending the match in straight games.
On the other hand, Sayaka could not live up to expectations in the title match as she failed to continue her winning streak and lost to the Thai shuttler in just 35 minutes.
It was an interesting match to watch as both ladies played with wonderful aggression and both had equal chance to win as they got chances to get their momentum going throughout the fight.
In the opening half, it was the Japanese who got a chance and she constructed a comfortable lead over her Thai opponent.
However, Busanan also changed her game plan and managed to end the lead of her rival until the mi-game break in the set.
After the one-minute interval, the spirited Thai lady continued her roller-coaster performance and she did not let her Japanese rival to catch up at any stage in the concluding half.
Busanan remained successful in grabbing the opening set with a four-point margin of 21-17.
In the following set, it was again Sayaka who took an early lead by playing tremendous game. She was leading the second game with a reasonable lead of 11-9.
After the mid-game interval, Sayaka continued her positive play without showing any sign of dropping down the pace of rallies.
The Japanese lady was ahead at 19-12 when Busanan stunned everyone when she played flawless badminton and levelled the score by reaching at 19-19.
At this crucial stage, the Thai lady did not let her Japanese opponent to take the ending points and bagged the set with a narrow score of 22-20.
Busanan won the Women’s Singles title by beating Sayaka with a decent margin of 21-17 and 22-20.
