Malaysia Open GP Gold: Lee Chong Wei grabs Men’s Singles title to cheer home fans – Badminton news
Malaysian ace Lee Chong Wei finally got rid of his shoulder injury and grabbed Men’s Singles title after beating Indonesia’s Sony Dwi Kuncoro in the title match of Malaysia Open GP Gold 2012 on Sunday, May 6, in Malaysia.
Chong Wei, who is World Number One at the moment, did not feel any pain in his final contest against the Indonesian and wrapped up title by beating him in three games.
The top seeded Chong Wei consumed 50 minutes in the court to register victory over Kuncoro and cheered his home fans at Bandaraya Stadium in Johor Bahru.
On the other hand, Kuncoro played well throughout the tournament and also showed his class in the opening set of final contest. But failed to play dominating badminton in the following games and lost to Chong Wei with a big margin.
While talking about his shoulder injury, Chong Wei said that he is not worried about it anymore.
He said, “After the GP Gold and the India Open last week, I’m no longer worried about my shoulder. This is a positive sign before the Thomas Cup Finals and Olympic Games.”
He further added, “I haven’t played Sony for a while (the last meeting was his win over Sony at the 2010 Indonesian Open) and I wasn’t too familiar with his game. But after losing the first game, I was able to turn it on and even play some risky shots.”
In the opening set of title match at Malaysia Open, Kuncoro showed his impressive craft while matching the pace of his higher ranked opponent.
The Indonesian was in his prime form as he troubled the World Number One on various occasions during the match.
On the other hand, Chong Wei could not dictate the pace of rallies in opening set and lost it with a 17-21 score on the board.
However, he found his rhythm in the second game when he played with precision and managed to take the game with a one-sided 21-8 score on the board.
In the deciding game, Chong Wei was everywhere as he left no room for Kuncoro to earn points. The top seed remained ahead in the whole set and bagged it with an impressive margin of 21-10.
Chong Wei bagged the title by finishing the final battle in three games with a 17-21, 21-8 and 21-10 score on the board.
