Malaysia Open GP Gold: Lee Chong Wei snatches crown from Sony Dwi Kuncoro
The badminton king Lee Chong Wei successfully defended his crown in Malaysia Open GP Gold by overpowering Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia in final match on May 6, 2012.
World Number one Chong Wei stole the limelight by registering concluding figures of 17-21, 21-8 and 21-10 after three hard-fought sets.
There was lot of drama in the finale which kept the spectators glued to their chairs. The native shuttler came back from a scratchy start and gave his supporters the reason for a grand celebration.
In the opening game of match, Sony Dwi stunned the maestro with his scintillating performance. The Indonesian campaigner employed all his experience and brilliance in the game to fetch four consecutive points straight away in the beginning.
Though, Chong Wei levelled the score at 4-4 yet he managed to enjoy a slight edge with 11-10 margin before the interval.
After the break, he faced bit trouble initially but few uninterrupted rallies took him to a secure position of 17-14 which ultimately helped him to clinch first match point with a respectable total of 21-17.
However, the Malaysian ace bounced back with a gutsy performance in second set of the match.
Chong Wei proved himself World’s best at beating the shuttlecock by wrapping the crucial game with a significant lead of 13 points in final total.
In first half of the match, he took some time to read his rival’s game but he established a convincing advantage with 11-6 score on the board.
After mid-game break, he did not allow his challenger to rise from the dust and kept him at lower end with his power packed smashes and masterly crafted drop net shots.
Chong Wei first raised his total to 14 and then left his opponent far behind with some fruitful rallies. The veteran Indonesian knelt down after reading decisive margin of 21-8.
Third game of the match turned just a formal announcement of Sony’s defeat as both contenders were poles apart in terms of court craft.
The Malaysian shuttler completely dominated the decider as he first placed a decent margin of 11-4 before the half time and then wrapped the show by putting final total of 21-10.
