Malaysia Open GP Gold: Wei Feng thunders while Soon Huat surrenders in pre quarter-finals
Men’s Singles campaigner of Malaysia, Wei Feng Chong ensured his presence in quarter-finals of Malaysia Open GP Gold by stamping Goh Soon Huat in the third round on May 3, 2012.
The pre quarter-final tussle lasted for one hour and both players displayed prime skills throughout three gruelling sets which gave out final results of 22-24, 21-14 and 21-11.
Wei Feng came back from a horrendous start and ended this battle in his favour while his opponent could not relish the benefit of an early advantage and was blown away in the final sets.
The opening game was just a curtain raiser to their dazzling performance in following segments of the show and they kept the spectators glued to their chair by making this a nerve-racking contest.
In the beginning, both players were locked at 6-6 but then Soon Huat took the driving seat and controlled overall pace of rallies. He placed a comfortable total of 11-6 before the interval.
After the break, Wei Feng also geared himself up and made swift progress with some uninterrupted rallies. Both players stayed equal at 17-17 and the game remained on knife’s edge until 22-22.
This cliff-hanging situation ended when Soon Huat tipped the scale in his favour by registering a concluding margin of 24-22.
However, next game completely belonged to spirited Wei Feng who earned second set with superior tactical and technical strategy.
The eight seed shuttler of the tournament was just a nail ahead initially at 7-6 but he gradually increased his speed and gained four-point advantage in first half of the game.
Wei Feng dictated his challenger in later part of the set also as he first placed a significant total of 15-10 and then despite of his competitor’s resistance bagged second match point with 21-14 score on the board.
World Number 39 shuttler served the notice of his supremacy in the decider also as he outclassed Soon Huat in all areas of game.
Wei Feng opened the doors of quarter-finals for himself with a staggering knock of 21-11 in third and final set.
However, another challenge awaits him in round of eight where he is to meet badminton king Lee Chong Wei.
