Malaysia Open: Viktor Axelsen trounces Zi Liang Derek Wong to enter into Men’s Singles main round
Denmark’s young shuttler, Viktor Axelsen, advances into the Men’s Singles main round after trouncing Singapore’s Zi Liang Derek Wong in the qualifying round of the 2012 Malaysia Open Super Series in Malaysia, on Tuesday, January 10.
Viktor, who is World Number 35 at the moment, has been playing positive badminton for the last six months. In the Malaysia Open, he has delivered remarkable performance in qualifying round of Malaysia Open and has secured his spot in main round of the tournament.
The Danish youngster, who was the third seed in the qualifying round of the tournament, lived up to the expectations as he consumed just 31 minutes in the court and ended the fight in straight games without taking much pain.
The Singaporean failed to put strong show against the in-form Danish opponent and lost the opening game with a decent margin. However, in the second game, Viktor showed no respect to his rival and finished the set with a comfortable score on the board.
The opening set of this Men’s Singles encounter, both shuttlers entertained the local fans with their aggressive skills as they played an attacking game throughout the opening half of the set. The score remain equal until 9-9 when the Danish shuttler managed
to score two points and set up a small lead of 11-9 at the one-minute interval.
After the break, the Singaporean player accelerated his speed and executed wonderful shots in the right areas which helped him to level the score by reaching 13-13. At this stage, Viktor geared up his speed at net and dominated the game by playing aggressive
badminton.
The Danish remained on track and did not miss any chance to extend his lead in the second half. The positive approach of the Danish helped him to end the opening set with a decent 21-17 score.
In the second game, both players put up strong show until 6-6 when Viktor took over the control of rallies. He dictated his Singaporean challenger in all areas of the court and managed a comfortable lead.
Zi Liang tried his level best to reduce the gap but Viktor did not let him to dominate the game. Viktor ended the second game with a comprehensive margin of 21-15. The final score of this Men’s Singles qualifying round encounter was 21-17 and 21-15.
