Malaysia clobbers Sri Lanka by 14-0 in 3rd Under-18 Junior Asia Cup Hockey Tournament
Malaysian juniors defeated their Sri Lankan counterparts in the Pool B match of the 3rd Under-18 Junior Asia Cup hockey tournament by a gigantic victory at 14-0 that took place at the Sengkang Stadium in Singapore, today, on June 23.
With this win in hand, the team not just qualified into the semi-finals, but also secured the top spot of Pool B, leaping one seed above over Korea with the highest number of goals at 18 leaving behind Korea on second place.
Before the match, team’s head coach, K. Gobinathan, expressed his intention that the team must seal a huge win over Sri Lanka to take the top spot in order to avoid the face-off against the defending champions, Pakistan, which is currently topping the Pool
A by 41 goals.
The team went by the coach’s set aim and have qualified for the next round. The team had to face a loss in the last edition’s final match on getting beaten down by Pakistan by 4-2 in Myanmar.
In the match, Malaysia succeeded in opening goals in the early minutes of the match, pressurising the Sri Lankan junior boys. With an early 5-0 lead over their opponents, the team dominated the field with total ball possession, scoring goals one after the
other and advancing their lead to 10-0 where the 10th goal was hit by Muhammad Azrul.
Soon, a short-corner was awarded to the team that perfectly slid into the net by Muhd Nor Aqmal that was followed by the 12th goal attempted by Muhd Syafiq, taking the lead to a solitary 12-0.
The match was found to be a one-sided play for Malaysia with Sri Lanka failing to match up with Malaysia’s pace.
As a result, the Malaysian junior side comfortably added in two more goals until the end of the seventy-minute play, setting scores at 14-0 with a declared victory for Malaysia.
In the meantime, a match between Pakistan and Kazakhstan is underway at the venue with Pakistan leading at 8-0, until half-time.
