Malaysia thrash Singapore 72-64 on day-2 of SEABA Championship – Basketball Recap
The Malaysian team kept their hopes alive of making it to the finals after defeating Singapore 72-64 in the second round of the Southeast Asian Basketball championship on Friday. On the opening day of the tournament, the Malaysians
lost to Philippines and this game was a must win for the team.
On the other hand, Singapore lost their second straight game, a day after they were comprehensively thrashed by the hosts Indonesia in the first round.
Shee Fai Loh was the top scorer for the Malaysian team. He spearheaded the line-up with a team-high 19 points. Li Wei Chee also scored 14 points, clutched 7 rebounds and handed out 4 assists in less than 29 minutes of playing time.
Despite of Wei Long Wong’s game-high 20 points, Singaporeans failed to mark an impression throughout the game.
Wong opened the scoring with a scorching blow from beyond the arc to provide an early advantage to the Singapore. However, their lead proved to be short-lived as Loh and Chee lifted the momentum for the Malaysians and snatched
the advantage. The Malaysian team procured 21-17 lead at the end of the first quarter and from there they never trailed throughout.
Malaysia continued to dominate the proceedings in the second quarter and amplified the advantage to 14 points going into the halftime. The Singaporeans appeared completely helpless against the brilliance of the opposition in the
third quarter as well. Malaysia outscored the Singapore team 16-7 run in the third period and wrapped up a massive 23 points lead.
The last quarter was more of a formality for Malaysia. Even though Singapore picked up the slack in the last 10 minutes and scored 25 points, however the huge lead that was constructed by the opposition in the first three quarters
provided an 8 point win to the Malaysians.
