Malaysian Amateur Shaaban Hussin grabs second round lead in Indonesian Masters
Shaaban Hussin, Malaysian Amateur golfer, silenced many of the blazing guns of the sport with his tremendous performance in the second round of the Indonesian Masters.
With a flurry of birdies in the front nine, Hussin scored five-under, 67 to grab the lead from Bangladesh’s overnight leader Siddikur. Current World number 2, Lee Westwood was seen moving with a blazing speed birdying the first four holes of the front nine but stumbled with a bogey at Par-4, 5th. Westwood quickly recovered from the loss to birdie the next one again. Siddikur, in his opening front nine, was birdie-less till the last reports.
Hussin did not start off on a promising note when he bogeyed the first hole, but recovered quickly to pull in four birdie putts in the next consecutive holes. With another bogey on the Par-4, sixth, Hussin again bounced back birdying the last two holes of the front nine.
“I had a bogey on my first hole and I never gave up from there. I tried to come back from that blemish and returned with four straight birdies. After the turn, I wanted to focus more and finished strongly which I did,” said the 30-year-old, who earned his Asian Tour status in 2010. He has been struggling for quite some time and was only able to finish top ten once in Cambodia.
Hussin now has an aggregate score of nine-under, 135, his best score in the 2009 Brunei Open. Also among the notable performances for the second round, Thailand’s Pariya Junhasavasdikul scored a seven-under, 65. His round included no less than six birdies and just one bogey. He also pulled in a glorious eagle at Par-5, 12th and is in contention for third place along with Kiradech Aphibarnrat, who scored seven-under, 68.
Clubhouse leader for the second place in the second round so far is Prayad Marksaeng, although he is still to play the back nine. His score of five-under, 67 for the first round and a three-under so far has catapulted him to grab the second place on the leaderboard.
It would be interesting to see the top golfers Westwood, Thongchai Jaidee and first round leader Siddikur come out with their score cards to challenge the amateur Hussin.
