Malaysian Amateur Volleyball Association rejuvenated after 13 years
The Malaysian Amateur Volleyball Association (MAVA) has been recently brought back to life and will now be known as the Malaysia Volleyball League. It has been 13 years since the league saw any action on the courts.
Azahari Sairin, the vice president of MAVA made the following statements today at the National Stadium which featured the launch ceremony of the event: "The focus on the league will be grassroots development and venues selected include small towns like Mentakab
and Batu Pahat. By organizing the league in smaller towns, we hope to promote the sport to the grassroots where quality tournaments are lacking."
Not only does the association plan to take the sport to the local level and develop it amongst the younger player, it also aims to give equal opportunity to the women of the country.
The league was first started in 1993 but could not continue past 1998. The reason for the failure of the league to stay operational was that it was lacking the financial requirements as the country was hit with a recession that was enveloping the world at
that time. The association was still facing financial issues that were hindering it from being revived but two of its long time sponsors, Mizuno and Mikasa, made it possible by giving financial aid.
The MAVA is going to be actively holding matches starting this July. The whole of July is booked for matches with short intervals coming in between. The first event is scheduled to be held on the 9th of July and will last until the 10th.
The second tournament will also be a two-day event and will take place on the 16th and 17th. The third showcase will be held on the 23rd and the final matches will be played on the 24th with the last event of the
month taking place on the the 29th and 31st.
The league is going to follow a round-robin format and will feature both men’s as well as women’s volleyball teams. The total number of men’s team taking part in the league is eight with five women’s team participating as well.
