Malaysian Open: Highlights from Wednesday
Igor Andreev registered his first victory in 7 years over Nikolay Davydenko when he defeated last year’s winner in a three setter clash at the Malaysian Open on Wednesday with a score of 7-6(5), 5-7 and 6-3.
The 102nd ranked tennis player in the world, Igor snapped a three-match losing streak after powering seven aces to register his 7th victory of the season. The match concluded in a time of 2 hours and 48 minutes in Kuala Lumpur. He previously
got the better of the second seed at the BCR Open Romania back in 2003.
"As a defending champion, I should probably have played better. I had a chance to win, but it was difficult against Andreev who has already played three matches and is playing very well,” said Davydenko after the match on Wednesday.
Igor, a runner up at the Szczecin Challenger event a few weeks ago on the other hand said, “I had a few matches behind my back. It gives you a little more confidence. For him, definitely was not easy to start, but still I am very happy with the way I played,
and beating a Top ten player is always a good sign."
Meanwhile, fourth seed Mikhail Youzhny successfully made his way into the quarters for the second time in a row after he fought past Alexandr Dolgopolov in a three setter clash on Wednesday. The final match score was 6-1, 5-7 and 7-5 in a time of 1 hour
and 55 minutes.
Mikhail, who is currently ranked number 9 in the world by the Association of Tennis Professionals, recorded his 36th victory of the year after smashing 10 aces while preventing 8 out of 10 break points.
Meanwhile, 6th seed Marcos Baghdatis blasted a total of 10 aces to get past Santiago Giraldo for a two setter victory in a time of 1 hour and 45 minutes on Wednesday. The final match score was 7-5 and 7-5. Marcos captured the Medibank International
Sydney trophy after defeating Richard Gasquet earlier this year during the month of January.
Milos Raonic, a qualifier from Canada also progressed to his first ATP World Tour quarter-finals with a 6-7(8), 7-6(9), and 6-3 victory over Sergiy Stakhovsky from Ukraine in less than three hours on Wednesday. Milos, who registered his first ATP World Tour
victory over Igor Kunitsyn on Tuesday, smashed a total of 15 aces and won 71% of the service points.
"I am happy that I kept my composure even after dropping a couple of set points in the first game. I served well, which was good. It makes it easier when you do not lose your serve all three sets,” said Milos.
Fifth seed David Ferrer from Spain, who enjoys a 1-2 record in ATP World Tour finals this year, surpassed Bernard Tomic, a wild card entrant from Australia in a two setter clash with a 6-3, 6-4 drubbing.
The last time Bernard faced a top 20 foe was in the second round of the Australian Open when he brushed aside Marin Cilic in five sets. The world number 11 as a result of this victory improved his record to 46-17.
In doubles action, Pilot Pen finalist Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Denis Istomin won their matches on day three of the Pan Pacific Open.
The top seeded duo of Marcin Matkowski and Mariusz Fyrstenberg required 64 minutes to defeat David Skoch and Frank Moser in a two setter clash on Wednesday. The final match score was 6-1, 6-4.
