Malaysian Open; Marcin Matkowski & Mariusz Fyrstenberg into the finals
Top seeds Marcin Matkowski and Mariusz Fyrstenberg are just a single victory away from defending their crown at the Malaysian Open Men’s doubles competition in Kuala Lumpur after getting the better of Mikhail Youzhny and Sergiy
Stakhovsky in a two setter clash on Saturday. The final match score was 6-0, 6-1.
The Polish pair managed to convert five of seven break point opportunities and won a total of twenty out of his twenty one points behind their opening serve as they cruised to win in a time period of forty three minutes in Kuala
Lumpur. They are through to their second ATP World Tour title battle of the year after capturing the title in Eastbourne after beating Fleming-Skupski earlier in June.
Win also boosts Matkowski and Fyrstenberg’s quest to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour finals in London. They are currently ranked number eleven in the 2010 ATP Doubles Team Rankings, with the top eight teams to qualify for
the season ending tournament at the O2 in London.
In the title battle, they will meet second seed Michal Mertinak and Frantisek Cermak who got the better of singles finalist Denis Istomin and Andrey Golubev in two sets. The final match score was 6-3, 6-4. The Slovak- Czech pair
broke serve during the sixth game to win the opening set and despite grabbing an early lead in the following set, broke serve again during the seventh game before recording win on Saturday. The clash concluded in a time period of seventy two minutes in Kuala
Lumpur.
Mertinak and Cermak, who are currently ranked number twelve in the 2010 ATP Doubles Team Rankings are also looking for a spot in the season ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, advanced into their third title battle in 2010.
They ended as finalists in Doha back in January and Umag earlier in July.
In other action in Bangkok, the Serbian-German duo of Viktor Troicki and Christopher Kas secured a spot in the final of the PTT Thailand Open Men’s competition when Guillermo Garcia Lopez and Marco Chiudinelli withdrew prior to
the clash, with Garcia Lopez suffering from a left Gluteal strain on Saturday.
