Malaysian male singles shuttlers tread into pre quarter-finals of All England Open
Malaysia’s male shuttlers proved their worth in first round of men’s singles event and trod into pre quarter-finals in All England Open on March 7, 2012.
The defending champion Lee Chong Wei and his compatriots Daren Liew and Wei Feng Chong cleared their first hurdles on opening day of main rounds.
The World Number one Lee Chong Wei stamped the Chinese challenger Wang Zhengming while Daren Liew and Wei Feng Chong surpassed Boonsak Ponsana and Pablo Abian respectively.
The Malaysian ace Chong Wei displayed his craft against the Chinese rival and eased into second round by hammering Wang Zhengming with significant margin of 21-16 and 21-11.
The Malaysian, who is seeking the honour of hat-trick title, looked calm and composed after sealing the victory.
Chong Wei said, “It was a good first match. I liked the feeling on the court. Hopefully, the second match will go better.”
The maestro is scheduled to lock horns with the Danish shuttler Hans-kristian Vittinghus in the pre quarter-finals and Chong Wei is aware of the Dane’s potential.
The cautious Chong Wei said, “In last week's German Open he did quite well and he's beaten (German Open finalist) Simon Santoso here. So it won't be an ordinary game.”
The defending champion Lee Chong Wei is one of the favourites to seal the crown but he needs to surpass his archrival the Olympic and World champion Lin Dan.
Meanwhile, the World Number 43 Malaysian shuttler Daren Liew followed the success trail set by his skipper earlier. He overpowered his Thai rival Boonsak Ponsana by registering the final score 21-19 and 23-21 on the board.
Daren Liew literally earned this straight-set victory as he had to sweat for 49 minutes before he secured his berth in the second round.
The Malaysian will now face the British contender Rajiv Ouseph in the pre quarter-finals of men’s singles event.
Next Malaysian shuttler was Wei Feng Chong who concluded this victory saga by nailing Pablo Abian of Spain and paved his path to the second round of main draw.
Wei Feng outclassed his Spanish rival with board showing final figures of 21-14 and 21-18 at end of the 37-minute tussle.
However, real challenge awaits him in the next round where he is going to test his skills against the World champion Lin Dan of China.
The young Malaysian will have to swing his arms and stretch his legs to full, against the Chinese master, if he wants to escort his country to glory in the All England Open.
