Malaysian national coach Tey Seu Bock advises backup players to start learning – Badminton news
The Malaysian national coach Tey Seu Bock advised his back-up players to stop complaining and start learning in joint training sessions with Lee Chong Wei.
During training sessions, some back-up players mumbled about being just sparring partners of World Number 1 Lee Chong Wei as some of them are engaged to give him a good practice for London Olympics by playing two-against-one and one-on-one with him in training
camp.
Seu Bock got all the reasons to criticise as two of these reserved players Chan Kwong Beng and Chong Wei Feng were pathetic in first round of the German Open and crashed out of the event.
Seu Bock thinks that Kwong Beng and Wei Feng could have performed better if they had sweat harder in the training sessions, arranged by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).
The coach said, “They had quite a favourable draw but failed to take their chances. It shows the lack of mental strength to make an impact on the international stage. Their self-confidence must start from home.”
The young Malaysian shuttler Wei Feng shined in Selangor Open last week and clinched the title despite of the presence of the World Number 43 Daren Liew, the Junior World Champion Zulfadli Zulkifli and World Number 51 Arif Abdul Latif.
BAM invited young talent like Wei Feng, Zulfadli and Kwong Beng to central training camp where they were given the opportunity of one-on-one sessions with the maestro Chong Wei. But some of them started moaning about these sparring sessions.
Seu Bock believes that intentions were good as it was meant to benefit both, Chong Wei and the back-up players but the reserved players threw away the golden chance.
He said, “Some grumble that they are reduced to being mere sparring partners for Chong Wei... they do not see the big picture. These players must make full use of playing against Chong Wei to improve their own standards. Not many get the chance to train
with the world’s best.”
Seu Bock hopes that these players will now concentrate to learn from the Malaysian ace to elevate their performance in the future events.
The 29-year-old Lee Chong Wei will not be representing the country after couple of years so this is a great opportunity for the future stars to grasp the best and prove themselves the true successors of the legend.
