Malaysian riders told to keep mum
The media will not hear anything from the members of the Malaysian cycling team preparing for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in India. Reports said that national coaching director John Beasley has instructed
the national riders to keep mum on their preparations and expectations in the quadrennial meet, which opens in New Delhi on 3 October.
The Olympic Council of Malaysia and the Malaysian National Cycling Federation have already been informed by Beasley regarding his gag order. Beasley issued the order to keep the cyclists focused on their
respective events. The same order will be implemented during the national team's preparations for the Guangzhou Asian Games in November. MNCF deputy president Datuk Naim Mohamad said he understands Beasley's objective and gave his full support to the national
team. He said the MNCF will come up with ways on how to co-operate with the national team and the media to avoid any miscommunication.
Malaysia's top track cyclists are aiming to make history in New Delhi as the country has never won a medal in the discipline. There are high hopes for the likes of Azizul Hasni Awang, Mohd Rizal Tisin
and Adiq Husainie Othman following their impressive performance in the international circuit. Azizul, who will see action in the 200-metre sprint, team sprint and keirin, is a two-time World Championships silver medallist and the reigning World Cup champion.
Rizal won a bronze medal in last year's World Championships in Poland while Adiq finished third in last year's World Junior Championships in Russia. Rizal will compete in the 1km time trial while Adiq will see action in the scratch event.
The other members of the track team are Mohd Edrus Yunus, Josiah Ng, Akmal Amrun, Amir Mustafa Rosli and Hariff Saleh. Adiq, Amir and Hariff will also strut their wares in the road events along with Anuar
Manan, Yusrizal Usoff and Shahrul Mat Amin.
