Malaysian squad is optimistic about their performance at Sudirman Cup – Badminton news
The Malaysian badminton squad is optimistic that they can deliver a good performance at the upcoming mixed-team championships of the Sudirman Cup, which will kick off from May 22, at Qingdao, China. Malaysia is among the top four countries in this event
along with China, Indonesia and Korea.
In the previous edition of this championship in 2009, Malaysia managed to enter the semi-final stage. In the semi-final battle, Malaysia played against China and lost the match by a one-sided margin of 0-3. No Malaysian shuttler could win even a singles
match in any category of the game against the eventual champions.
However, this time Malaysia is hopeful as Lee Chong Wei is in tremendous form as he has won five titles so far this year. He defeated Lin Dan of China in the All England Premier Super Series and proved that he is more mature now as compared to the previous
years where the Chinese remained dominant.
The Men’s Doubles pair of Tan Boon Heong – Koo Kien Keat, who have won the recent Malaysia Open GP Gold, are also back on track too. The duo is capable of beating the top shuttlers from China and Korea when they are workign together.
The Men’s Singles coach, Rashid Sidek, said, "Chong Wei and Kien Keat-Boon Heong must deliver the points and we can hope for a point in the other events.”
Among the other notable players in the Malaysia squad, are the Goh Liu Ying – Chan Peng Soon in the Mixed Doubles and Chin Eei h*i – Wong Pei Tty in Women’s Doubles.
Peng Soon – Goh Liu entered into the semi-final stage in the India Open Super Series and has recently played the final of the Malaysia Open GP Gold. The couple is in good shape and working hard to continue their good form.
Eei h*i – Wong Pei finished as runners-up in last month’s Australia Open GP Gold and also got the same result in last week’s India Open Super Series.
If Malaysia manages to get to the top in their group matches, then they will not play against the stronger China or Korea teams in the quarterfinals. The other teams in Malaysia’s group are Indonesia and Russia, who will be easier to score and win against.
