Malaysian women badminton players ready for new ‘skirts’ dress code of BWF
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has introduced a new dress code for female badminton players across the globe. The dress code will apply for top ranking tournaments like the Super Series and Grand Prix Gold events. The Malaysian women have reportedly
accepted the dress code.
The women will be required to wear skirts or proper dresses for the top three tournaments of the calendar year.
The BWF president said in an interview that the authority had taken the step to make international tournaments more attractive for the players as well as spectators of the sport.
He said the text of clause 19.2 of the World Badminton Federation constitution stated that to make the appearance of the players more attractive, they will have to wear standardised skirts or proper dresses for tournaments of levels 1 to 3.
As women players of Malaysian Badminton Federation are also participating in top three international tournaments of badminton so the president announced that its players would also abide by the current ruling of BWF. He said the Malaysian Federation would
provide all its female shuttlers, particularly Chin Eei h*i with the new standardized skirts to wear in international tournaments.
Chin Eei h*i, Malaysia’s most famous female badminton player, said in an interview that although she would abide by the new rule, it would not be to promote fashion. She said she would wear skirts although she had never felt comfortable in one.
Ng Chin Chai, secretary of the Malaysian Badminton Association, said that the authority would abide by the BWF ruling although the BWF Information Wing had not informed them of the changes yet. He said the global authority’s information wing did not coordinate
with affiliated federations and the Malaysian unit had only found out about the new rule through other sources. He also said that the BWF had taken the decision without taking its affiliated boards in confidence beforehand, knowing well that women players
of several countries did not feel comfortable in skirts. However, he said, the rule would be followed by the players of his country.
