Malaysia’s Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying consistent in major international events – Badminton News
Malaysia’s Mixed Doubles shuttlers, Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying, remain consistent performers in the major international events for the last one year.
Malaysia has not been performing well in the Mixed Doubles category for many years and the duo’s performance, comes as a welcome note for the country.
Chan Peng and Goh Liu, through their superb performance, are keeping the badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) hopes of winning medals in the World Championships and Olympic Games alive.
In the 2011 Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold, Chan Peng and Goh Liu delivered incredible performances against the best pairs of the world. The Malaysian duo defeated World Number two pair of Thoungthokam Saralee and Sudket Prapakamol, from Thailand. Chan Peng
and Goh Liu also thrashed Pia Zebadiah Bernadeth and Fran Kurniawan for the first time, in their five head-to-head meetings.
Chan Peng and Goh Liu lost the final match of the event to Lilyana Natsir and Tantowi Ahmad of Indonesia. Goh Liu demonstrated wonderful improvement in the front part of the court. She has become strong at the net and proved her skills in the home event.
The title winner, Lilyana while speaking about Goh Liu, said, “The lady player (Liu Ying) has improved. Her technique at the front court is much better now. And I guess this has given the pair a lot of confidence. They will be a pair to watch out for.”
Chan Peng and Goh Liu were the first Malaysian couple who won the Mixed Doubles crown, in the 2010 Asian Badminton Championships. They are expected to become major contenders in the 2012 London Olympics.
National coach for Mixed doubles, Jeremy Gan, said that Chan Peng and Goh Liu have reduced the gap, but they are still behind the top pairs of China.
Gan, said, “Their performances at the GP Gold showed that they are of the same standard as the top pairs from Indonesia, Thailand and even South Korea. But China are still a class above the rest. The Sudirman Cup will be the next big event for them
and it will be a good platform to test them.”
The coach is optimistic of Chan Peng and Goh Liu’s success, in the upcoming major events which include the World Championships and Olympic Games.
