Malaysia’s Koo Kien Keat, Tan Boon Heong and Lee Chong Wei to skip Sea Games – Badminton News
Malaysia’s Koo Kien Keat, Tan Boon Heong and Lee Chong Wei will not participate in the Sea Games, which will take place in Indonesia, from November 11-25.
The Malaysia’s Men’s Doubles top pair of Koo Kien and Tan boon will skip the event to work hard in their training sessions for the 2012 London Olympics, which will take place at the Wembley Indoor Arena in London, England.
Chong Wei has already said that young shuttlers should participate in the Sea Games, as he wants them to gain experience by playing against the top shuttlers in international events.
Secretary of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), Ng Chin Chai, also supported the view point of the World Number One, Chong Wei, who asserted that chances should be given to young players.
Ng Chin said, “The BAM have made plans to expose a newer group of players for the Games. We will name the squad at least three months before the Games.”
All top shuttlers of Malaysia are working hard in their training sessions to perform well in the upcoming events to earn rankings points, which will secure them a place in the 2012 London Olympics.
While talking about the plans of the top Malaysian shuttlers who will miss the Sea Games, Ng Chin said, “All the players under the Road to London programme – Chong Wei, Koo and Tan – will focus on their preparation for the Olympics.”
The absence of the top seeds in the Men’s Singles and Men’s Doubles categories has opened up a race among the young shuttlers to represent Malaysia at the Sea Games. Now the young players have a good chance to occupy the vacant places by performing well
in the upcoming national and international tournaments.
All back-up players in the national squad are expected to work hard in the domestic and international events to earn a better ranking. If the young players are able to perform well, they have a good chance to replace Chong Wei, Koo Kien and Tan Boon in the
Sea Games.
