Malaysia’s Sonia Cheah determined to recuperate from injury before Asian Junior Championships 2011
Malaysia’s Sonia Cheah, who is one of the top shuttlers in the Girl’s Singles category, is determined to recuperate from a heel injury before the commencement of the Asian Junior Championship 2011, which will be held in India from July 2 to 9.
Sonia received an injury during the Thailand Satellite in March, but she continued playing in training sessions without taking care of her injured heel. The injury got worse when she played the 100Plus National Junior Circuit Grand Prix Finals. The injury
has forced her to stay away from playing competitive badminton.
The 18-year-old recently got a promotion by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) and she has entered into the squad of the senior shuttlers from the junior’s category. Her consistent performance for the last six months has earned her a place in the
national Women’s Singles squad in Malaysia.
Recently, Sonia withdrew at the quarter-final stage of the National Junior Circuit, because of the severe pain from her injury. While talking about her withdrawal from the event, Sonia said, “It was very disappointing having to withdraw in the quarter-finals.
But the pain was unbearable.”
She further added, “I will need time to recover from the injury and hopefully it will not affect my chances to play in the Asian Juniors. I can still do light training and I hope I will regain full fitness for centralised training next month.”
The young shuttler is optimistic to recover from the injury before the Asian Junior Championships 2011. In the previous edition of this junior championship, Sonia played very well and reached the quarter-final in the Girl’s Singles category. In the top eight,
she lost to China’s talented young shuttler, Deng Xuan.
In the preceding year, Sonia clinched the title of Dutch Open Junior Championships. She has been impressive in all events since January 2011. However, she is fighting hard at the moment, against the injury to get fit as soon as possible to play in the Asian
Junior Championship, which is the biggest event in Asia for the junior’s category.
