Malaysia’s Tan Aik Quan aims to emulate badminton legend Tan Aik Huang – Badminton news
Malaysia’s young shuttler Tan Aik Quan desires to become a badminton legend like Tan Aik Huang, who was a superb player of 1960’s and brought glory to his country.
The young Aik Quan is determined to performing well at the international level by following the footsteps of the former legend.
The young player said that he has heard about Aik Huang, who won the All England Championship in 1966, and he wants to become a great shuttler like the former player.
The 21-year-old has booked his place in the mixed doubles main round of the Malaysia Open GP Gold 2011. He will be fighting in the championship along with his partner Lai Pei Ying, who delivered a wonderful performance in the qualifying round of the event.
In the qualifying round, the young pair defeated the experienced duo of Ayaka Takahashi and Kenta Kazuno of Japan in a three set match. The final score of the match was 21-14, 22-24 and 21-9. In the main round of the event, Aik Quan and Lai Pei will be up
against Chau Hoi Wah and Wong Wai Hong of Hong Kong.
The young pair delivered surprising performance in Thailand recently, where they won their first senior crown at the Thailand International Championship. Aik Quan has come on the right track again after recovering from a severe foot injury.
“I joined the BAM when I was in Form 3. I was a singles player but I left the set up when I was 18 due to a nagging foot injury,” Aik Quan said.
After leaving the Badminton Association of Malaysia, the shuttler went back to his hometown, Kedah. He continued his training and worked really hard on fitness and other elements of the game. He represented Kedah in the 2010 Malaysian Games and clinched
gold medal in the team event. He also won the title in the mixed doubles category which forced BAM to recall him.
Aik Quan stated, “I am happy that my partnership with Pei Jing is improving. This is our fifth international event. Hopefully, this will be a start of better things for us.”
The young shuttler is confident of performing well in the main round of the Malaysia Open GP Gold. His determination to become a world-class player is unshakeable as he is one of the most dedicated and hard working shuttlers in Malaysia.
