Malaysia’s Tan Bin Shen - Gan Teik Chai continue to protest against BAM’s decision – Badminton News
Malaysian Men’s Doubles players, Tan Bin Shen and Gan Teik Chai continue to protest against the decision of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), in which the pair has been denied with their deserved participation at the 2011 World Championships,
to be held in England.
Tan Bin and Teik Chai have been dropped from the squad for the World Championships, despite the fact that the duo qualified for the mega event on merit. In their place, BAM decided to send Hoon Thien How and Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif to the tournament, regardless
of their non-qualification in the event.
The young pair has submitted their protest letter to the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), in an attempt to find justice. They met with OCM secretary, Sieh Kok Chi and handed over the letter to him. Now, this issue will be discussed under the supervision
of the Athletes’ Dispute Committee of OCM.
The clouds of uncertainty are hanging upon the independent shuttlers of Malaysia, when it comes to participation in major events including World Championships and Olympic Games.
The OCM secretary highly appreciated Tan Bin and Teik Chai for raising their voice against the decision, which deprived them from taking part in the mega event. Sieh Kok said, “I admire Gan and Tan for their guts to bring this matter to the committee. Usually,
our athletes dare not speak up.”
He further added, “I hope this will be an example to other athletes. There are avenues for them to fight for their rights – whether what they are fighting for is right or wrong is another matter.”
The secretary assured the shuttlers that their case will be discussed in the committee and will be resolved in the best possible way. He said, “The panel will now try to set up a meeting with BAM. Then, we will bring both parties together so that we can
reach an amicable solution.”
It is expected that clear guide lines will now be created regarding independent shuttlers, who are not a part of the national team but have a better world ranking and are eligible for participation in all major events in the world of badminton.
