Malaysia’s Tan Chun Seang determined to continue playing as an independent shuttler – Badminton News
Malaysia’s Men’s Singles shuttler, Tan Chun Seang, who left the national squad last month, is determined to continue playing competitive badminton as an independent shuttler. He has been carrying a knee injury, which forced him to take rest after the Malaysia
Open Grand Prix Gold 2011, held in May.
Tan Chun has been playing good badminton at international level and he is one of the talented shuttlers of Malaysia. The 25-year-old shuttler has been playing for his country for a period of over five years. However, he had to leave the national squad as
his severe injury has shortened his professional career.
Due to his injury, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) banned Tan Chun’s participation in international events for a period of two years. However, the shuttler has the permission to play all tournaments which will take place outside the Asian continent.
While talking about his injury and retirement from the national squad, Tan Chun said, “My knee injury never really healed and it really slowed down my career. Resigning from the national team seemed the best option as I couldn’t really contribute much and
I was only hindering the progress of others.”
Nevertheless, the shuttler is confident and determined to continue playing good badminton in Europe.
Speaking about his future prospects as a professional player after leaving the national team, Tan Chun said, “But it’s not the end of the world for me as I can still compete in Europe. I will join a German club next month and play in the German League in
Munich for three months. After that, if my condition allows, I will continue playing in Europe.”
He further said that he will appeal to the BAM to reconsider the ban imposed on him, as he also wants to participate in Asian events.
Tan Chun is currently playing in the Kedah Open 2011, where all independent shuttlers are participating as it has been made compulsory by the BAM. The spirited shuttler has currently booked his berth in the Men’s Singles quarter-final of the event.
