Malaysia’s Tan Kim Her to serve as new head coach for Men’s Doubles national squad – Badminton news
Malaysia’s Tan Kim Her, who has been serving as the chief coach for back-up shuttlers in the Doubles category, will now serve the Men’s Doubles national squad as their new head coach. He will now train national elite shuttlers along with back-up players.
The Coaching and Training Committee (CTC) decided to change the roles of Rexy Mainaky, who has been the head coach of Men’s Doubles. Now, Rexy will train the Women’s and Mixed Doubles squad of Malaysia.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) wants to put the progress of shuttlers on the right track after suffering from a complete failure in last month’s 2011 BWF World Championships. In the mega event, no Malaysian shuttler could win the gold medal
in any category of the game. Only World Number One, Lee Chong Wei managed to win the silver medal in the category of Men’s Singles.
After observing the reasons for the failure of players at the World Championships, CTC, with the co-ordination of BAM decided to appoint Kim Her as head coach for Men’s Doubles and Rosman Razak and Pang Cheh Chang as the assistant coach to him.
The Men’s Doubles top pair, Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong, who are World Number Five, requested to play under the supervision of Cheh Chang and the chairman of CTC, Ng Chin Chai has accepted their appeal and is consideration it.
While talking about the changes in the coaching roles, Chin Chai said, “We didn't achieve our target at the World Championships and after discussing and receiving feedback from relevant parties, we decided on these changes with the target being gold in the
Olympics.”
He further added, “Kim Her will take charge of the combined men's doubles squad while Rexy will take over the women and mixed doubles squads with designated assistants while Rashid is the head coach of the men's singles.”
Now, the coaches will join their assigned shuttlers with one single aim and that is to improve their ranking and make them qualify for the 2012 London Olympics. Under the changed coaching structure, the target for Chong Wei and Koo Kien – Tan Boon is to
win the gold medal in their respective categories.
