Malaysia’s Wong Choong Hann seeks revenge at the 2011 World Championships – Badminton News
Malaysia’s veteran player, Wong Choong Hann is ready to take revenge of his 2008 Olympic outing from Taiwan’s Hsieh Yu Hsing, as both shuttlers are set to meet in the Men’s Singles first round of the 2011 World Championships, which will kick-off in London
on August 8.
World Number 31, Wong Choong lost to Hsieh Yu in the Men’s Singles third round at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The same opponent will meet him in the opening round of the world meet next week and the Malaysian is ready to beat him this time.
The 34-year-old Wong Choong has never defeated Hsieh Yu in their previous two meetings, as he lost on both occasions. Now, he has got the opportunity to reduce the deficit by winning their first-round battle.
While recalling his defeat from Hsieh Yu, the Malaysian said, “Hsieh spoiled my last Olympic outing. He is now standing in my way at my last world meet. I will be ready for him this time.”
He further said, “I will leave for London on Aug 6. I still have one week to fine-tune my game. For now, my focus is to clear the opening round.”
Wong Choong will meet Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand in the second round, if he passes the first hurdle in the opening round. While talking about Peter Hoeg Gade of Denmark, who is also 34-years-old and placed in the same half of the draw, Wong Choong said,
“Peter has been playing well this year. He has enjoyed some good results and will probably be one of the old-timers with a shot at challenging for the title.”
The Danish has been playing good badminton this year, as he reached in the final of the India Open Super Series and the Indonesia Open Premier Super Series. On both occasions, he lost to World Number One, Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia.
Wong Choong, on the other hand, is looking to secure a first round win, as he wants to beat the Taiwanese shuttler to take revenge of his Olympic defeat.
