Malaysia’s Wong Mew Choo retires from professional badminton
Malaysia’s Wong Mew Choo announced retirement from professional badminton as according to her, she could not play at her best anymore due to recurring injuries. The world number 24, and top seed in Malaysia, has been playing for her country in the category
of women’s singles for more than nine years and has represented Malaysia in all major events conducted by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
Wong Mew is the only Malaysian female who reached quarterfinal stages of the World Championships and All England Open. The 27-year-old won numerous matches against the top athletes on different occasions. The national squad of women’s singles will have to
work hard now as there is no other shuttler who is ranked in the top 25 spots in world rankings.
The most notable event that Wong Mew won was the China Open in 2007. She proved her worth in this event by beating the top Chinese athletes on their home ground and in front of their home crowd. After the event though, she suffered from severe injuries that
hit her after regular intervals and she struggled in almost every international event that followed. Her injuries made it impossible for her to continue playing at professional level.
Wong Mew was known for her stamina and endurance as she always remained defensive in her game plan. Her major skills were the defensive strokes and long rallies as she had always lacked the power in her smashes as compared to the other top players of the
world. However, the Malaysian's defensive skills were incredible and she effectively employed these skills in key matches against the top ranked players from different countries.
By recognising the services of Wong Mew for the country, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has decided to appoint her as Coach of women’s singles. As there is no other notable Malaysian female shuttler, Wong Mew will work to produce better players
and will help in upgrading the standard of the game in women’s singles. She is expected to join BAM and will start working as a coach in the upcoming month of May.
