  1. Very generally, the male birds are more colorful, to attract the females.  This is not always true, but mostly something you can count on.  Look at the peacock, the pea hen does not have any bright tail feathers.

  2. Normal the female birds have more of a plain color like female ducks can be plain brown and male ducks can be a bright colors like male mallard ducks.

  3. Unlike humans (where the females are the pretty ones), male birds are the beauties.  Ever compare a peacock to a peahen?  The difference is scary.  Now, if we're talking about baby birds, the only way to really find out is to "s*x" them.  *ahem* it was on an episode of "Dirty Jobs", where Mike had to help "s*x" baby chickens.

  4. Normally, female birds are plainer than the males.

With Some wild birds it is difficult to tell, the difference is only visable up close.

Like how you distinct parakeets genders, it will vary from different birds. To tell the genders with a persific bird, you will have to research that bird.

  5. For most pet birds, there are general guidelines to determine the s*x of the bird. These guidelines are based on the physical characteristics of the bird and should only be used as a guideline, because there are exceptions to every rule. For most people, however, they are enough to satisfy their need to know.

In parakeets there are ceres, which are small dots on the bird's beak. In mature male parakeets the ceres are bright-bluish; the female ceres are reddish-brown. When the birds are young, it is difficult to tell because the ceres of both sexes are pale blue.

In the cockatiel, males are generally great singers. Female cockatiels have been known to talk but are generally quiet. The male cockatiel has bright orange cheek patches. The females also have orange cheek patches but they are dull in color. These again are only guidelines. In other birds it is virtually impossible to tell the difference between a male and female.
