Question:

Male betta in my aquarium??

Well I have guppies, four of them, no super fancy with large tails, but they are bright. Would the male see them as another betta? Also I have longfined zebra danios. They nip, but I have seen no damage to anyone's fins.

The other fish I have are

a dwarf gourami

a blue 3 spotted gourami

4-5 inch pleco

2 oto. catfish

and a zillion baby guppies

2 mystery snails

I'm assuming the betta would enjoy eating the baby guppies...but would he eat himself to death?

It would be so beautiful to have a betta in there, I had one with goldfish once and he was fine, but these are more colorful fish and more baby guppies than he would know what to do with. However they hide VERY well. (there are many fake plants in there, around 10 or so)

Anyways, let me know what you think! I am fine with no as an answer, I don't want to hurt any fishies.

Thanks for any advice!

  1. My mother has an aquarium that contains both guppies and a male beta, and they leave each other alone.  The beta may kill the baby guppies, but he won't eat them.

They'll probably be fine.  My mother has several other fish in her aquarium as well, and they are too fast for the beta to even get close to.

  2. we all can't be exact with our answers as all Betta's are different. i have had a betta in my aquarium and he didn't touch anyone. but i guess you ll have to look for a peaceful one. at my local aquarium they have some with other fish. so just try it. if you have problems pick a good friend to give it to.

  3. its better to separate some of them because it looks so crowded to see and for the fish to live on,and in case when feeding them,it would be a hussel for them to eat.

  4. The gourami tend to bite the Betta's long tails and generally harass them, they wouldn't be a good tank mate for them.

The plecos would be okay I think, except that it would be hard to maintain a temperature that both the Betta and the plecos would thrive at.

The Oto catfish are excellent tank mates for Betta, as are the snails.

The guppies would also have problems, either the Betta or the guppies would go after eachother's fins.

Since you've got a few fish in there that wouldn't be compatible with the Betta, I'd stay away with having the Betta in that tank.

As for the food, Bettas are carnivores, and their food needs to reflect that.  That means Betta food, not just the typical flakes.

  5. yea they can go together he will eat the baby guppies as a snack but mine chased the older gupies to

  6. Bettas tend to do well with peaceful fish that can out swim them and when the tank has lots of places to hide.  Gourami are related to betta, and have similar territorial response.  The dwarf gourami might not be an issue, but the 3 spot gourami might be a major issue.  I'd try, and see if the fish store has female betta.  A 50 gallon tank would have enough space for the girls have their own areas.  The girl aren't as showy, bu tend to perk up in color once they aren't stressed out.
