Question:

Male golfers and their egos?

Why do men have such egos in golf? A friend and I played twice this week and on both days there was a foursome of men in front of us. On the first day, only one of them could hit from the back tee and get over 200 yds. But the other three refused to move to the white tees. The next day, two could hit over 200 but the other two refused to move to the white.

My friend and I were playing faster than the men and they would not let us play through. What is it with male golfers and the egos?

  1. Not all male golfers have egos.  I want to play well when I play as most golfers do.  However, I'm not going to play from the tips of a golf course unless the yardage fits my level of play.  Depending on the course and how crowded it is, the ranger tells groups to play faster.  If it isn't crowded, then ideally the slower group should allow the faster group to play through.  I usually play fast enough until they have no choice.  I don't recommend it, but I have hit into another group in the fairway intentionally/accidentally.  It was one of my best drives ever on the hole I was playing and it ended up in between the two carts of the group in front of us.  It gets frustrating after a while when they look behind and see you and still don't allow you to play through.  From my experience, I haven't had that issue of females playing faster.  I've never seen a foursome of females on the golf course.  It doesn't matter though.  If you are playing slower than the group behind you, you should allow them to play through.

  2. I do see a lot of men that golf have Large egos.  i think some men are just not able to realize how bad they are. I have played only once from the back tee to see a different point of view and to see how much better i have to become to "Earn" the right to play from the back tee's.

  3. as an avid male golfer i apologize for them. The "play from the tips" mentality usually comes into play on vacations. As stated earlier though, all it does is slow down play.Next time call for the ranger to allow you to play through.

  4. That's nearly all men, in nearly all situations.  The male ego is HUGE!!!  And easily damaged.

  5. An ego might be ok at times if the person can back it up.  Most golfers can't back up their own ego with a sound game.  And now sadly courses seem to be full of techno-jerks who think the game is defined buy their latest club and bag purchase.

  6. Most men want to "see all of the golf course" because they paid their green fee and are entitled to it. Unfortunately it does nothing but slow down play. You explain it to them.

  7. I blame the golf courses for a lot of this.  They don't have good starters who should explain to the golfers that the course wants them to enjoy themselves as much as possible and that the back tees are only recommended for those with 0 to 5 handicaps.  Then allow the group to get well out of the way before allowing the next group to hit.  Keep rangers on the course to speed players up if they get out of position.  But you were a twosome playing behind a foursome so you should expect to wait.  If all six of you shot even par it would still take them almost twice as long to play as you.  How long did it take to play?  It doesn't matter what tees they play if they keep pace.

  8. GBeck if you play faster than the men than God Bless You because if I get stuck behind women my four hour Golf game turn into six hour

  9. Heck...I am a male golfer and can't stand c**p like that.

  10. It may be a bonding thing. Sometimes there are agreements among friends and we are not privy to it,  just playing behind their foursome.

  11. society doesnt teach it humility.  it teaches the opposite to feel good without being good. they know their buddies play from the tips so they do as well

i totally know what u mean though. im a golf club member and see it all the time.  i bet they all think they drive the ball 250 also, when its more like 190

no about ur friends husband.  he may have a bad short game just because he hits it long doesnt mean hes good enought to play from the tips

  12. Stupid is, as stupid does. I've played behind two couples who rode male/female, instead of male/male and female/female. Apparently they're either 1) unaware that riding same s*x would speed up their play, or 2) they didn't care that they were holding up the entire course behind them.

When I go on golfing vacations with my buddies, we try to pair up riders by the tee box they're going to hit from, usually the younger guys from the tips and the old geezers from the whites. And we never have a problem letting groups through; we realize they're probably on vacation too & they don't want to spend it waiting on us.

I appreciate your concern over slow play, but I wouldn't be too quick to blame it on gender. I've been held up behind just as many women as men, who wouldn't let me through.
