I have just gotten a male pomeranian. I dont really know too much about the breed. I got him from a friend whos parents would not allow her to keep him, and mine couldnt turn him away. but I keep seeing things online about female pom shedding cycles. do males have that? do they ever shed? i havent seen any fur from him that i have noticed at least.

  1. it doesnt make a diff if its girl or boy, jus depends on what breeds and the fur type.

yeh they shed tho. as long as you wash and bruch him regularly he shouldnt get 2 bad, and maybe invest in a furminator, look it up on ebay, everyone i know whos used it says theyre awsome

  2. Dogs shed around twice a year (Poms shed very little which is good)

What info would you like to know? They are the most gorgeous of all toy breeds!

  3. they shed too, I'm pretty sure.

my friend has a pomeranian and it sheds like a cotton factory.

  4. A good website would be the dog breed info website.  It is very informative for first time dog owners.  Also the library has a lot of great books, videos and dvd's you can take out.  Don't forget the Vet is a great source of answers.  Most Pomeranians shed a little all year round and really blow out their undercoats in June.  You will have to buy a special comb called a rake to deal with it.

  5. Pomeranians need weekly routine grooming.  They do not require bathing often but do need to be brushed and combed out consistently or their coat will mat to the skin (unhealthy and uncomfortable).

Dogs shed daily (most breeds anyway).  But there are major shedding cycles.  (By the way this is called "blowing coat".)  Seasonal shedding occurs twice a year - in the spring and in the fall.  Autumn shedding gets rid of the "old" summer coat to make room for a plush winter coat.  Spring shedding gets rid of the "old" winter coat that is no longer necessary.

Females "blow coat" not only for seasonal regrowth but also during their "heat" cycle, and after they have given birth to pups.

A common myth is that short haired dogs shed less and therefore you do not have a "hair" problem.  Not so.  Short haired dogs do not have the undercoat that accompanies the longer haired animals.  So you will notice their hair everywhere on a daily basis (not all short haired breeds), and it is very hard to sweep or vacuum up.  The short hairs are like little needles that stick into material, etc.  Very annoying if you are a stickler about pet hair in your home.  The long haired, especially the thick spitz type coats, is easier to clean up after.  But you now have the issue of serious grooming to maintain a healthy and comfortable animal.  The reason that you are not noticing your Poms shed hair is that the undercoat being shed is trapped within the outer coat (guard hairs).  This is where the matting issue comes in.  If your Pom was groomed routinely and properly groomed you would actually notice the shed hair/fur.
