Malia Manuel and Laura Enever move into Roxy Pro Biarritz 2012 quarter-finals
Hawaii’s Malia Manuel and Australia’s Laura Enever successful advanced through into the quarter-finals at Roxy Pro Biarritz 2012, the sixth of seven stops on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour, after emerging triumphant in
their respective Round 4 heats that went down at La Grande Plage in Biarritz, France, on Saturday, July 14.
Manuel managed to get the better of New Zealand’s Paige Hareb in the third heat of Round 4 to confirm her place in the quarter-finals, bringing the competition to an end for her rival.
The fourth heat saw Enever overcome Peru’s Sofia Mulanovich to qualify for the quarter-finals while removing the latter from the contention for the event title.
The latest day of the competition promised to be exciting as the battles for survival were expected to become even more intense. The conditions were not the best, testing the surfers for both experience as well as perseverance.
The third heat saw Manuel and Hareb take each other on in a battle for survival. After stumbling in their previous heats, both the girls found themselves pushed against the edge, facing a do-or-die situation.
As the heat got underway, Manuel got off to a slow start, but gradually built momentum to eventually post a 5.83 on the score-board. She immediately followed it up with a 6.27-point ride to reach a heat-total of 12.10 points.
Hareb failed to come up with a strong response, collecting only a couple of scores in the four-point range off her best waves to finish with a heat-total of 9.16 points. As a result, she was forced to surrender victory and the quarter-final spot to her rival.
The battle for the final quarter-final spot took place between Enever and Mulanovich. After failing to do well in their previous heats, both the surfers were determined to redeem themselves.
However, Mulanovich continued to struggle with her rhythm and finished with a heat-total of 8.66 points, which included a couple of 4.33-point waves.
Enever, on the other hand, appeared in a much better form and managed to secure the win through a heat-total of 12.13 points, which comprised of a 7.43 and 4.70-point ride.
