Malignaggi: I look forward to becoming the WBA World Welterweight Champion – Boxing News
Paulie Malignaggi, former IBF light welterweight champion, will be taking on the undefeated WBA World Welterweight Champion Vyacheslav Senchenko on April 29 at the Donboss Arena in Donetsk, Ukraine. The event is being sponsored by Union Boxing Promotion
and is being distributed by Integrated Sports Media throughout United States.
Malignaggi, who currently holds 30 wins, 4 losses and 6 knockouts in his portfolio, is confident that he will be able to defeat his opponent to become the WBA World Welterweight Champion. In his recent media interaction, he said, “I look forward to becoming
the WBA World Welterweight Champion. I’m not worried about fighting over there because the WBA and Golden Boy Promotions have appeased any fears I may have had at first. Golden Boy takes good care of its fighters, so I took the fight.”
Malignaggi won the IBF junior welterweight championship back in 2007 via a 12 round decision over Lavoemore N’dou. Unfortunately, Malignaggi lost his title to Ricky Hatton in late 2008 and then he moved up to the welterweight division. It should be noted
here that Malignaggi’s welterweight career has been unbeaten to date. He has defeated some well known fighters in the division such as Jose Miguel Cotto, Orlando Lora and Michael Lozada.
When asked about it, he iterated, “I love fighting at 147 pounds and look forward to this opportunity to become a two-division world champion that will legitimize me even more. I’m smarter now about my body and making 147 isn’t a strain. I’m a high-energy
fighter and now I’m not draining myself losing weight.”
He further added that this fight is important for him because he wants to win and then have his first title defense at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, his hometown. He said that he is confident he will beat the champion to become a two-division world champion.
According to him, the current champion has not faced a fierce fighter like him and so he will be knocked out soon.
Malignaggi’s confidence surely sounds like one of a champion but will he be able to win and go to his hometown as champion?
