Mallorca pushing hard to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix in 2012 – Formula 1 news
Many countries have been keen to have a Formula 1 grand prix of late. This includes Rome, Africa, India and many others. One of the venues that is willing to host a Formula 1 grand prix is Mallorca, which is a Spanish island.
Since most of the officials recently revealed that the FIA wants to avoid holding 2 races in the same country per season, Formula 1 will be more global than ever before as each race will be hosted in a different country.
2011 will introduce the first-ever Formula 1 Indian Grand Prix in history while US will host a Formula 1 grand prix in 2012 in Austin, Texas instead of the usual Indianapolis circuit.
Other than that, it is expected that Russia will also host a grand prix within the next couple of years. However, since Spain already hosts 2 races that is the Spanish Grand Prix and the European Grand Prix in Valencia, it is believed that if Spain comes
up with a new track, the European Grand Prix might be replaced with it.
The organisers of the venue are pushing really hard to secure a race in Mallorca and it seems that they are now seeking investors that might be willing to fund for the first race expected to take place in 2012.
“The project would help not only the local community but give the whole island a tremendous economic boost,” said Llucmajor mayor Joan Jaume.
The track is expected to be designed by Gabriel Palmer who has been highly criticised for his lack of experience but he claims that he has consulted with Team Ferrari about this matter.
“I have included their corrections in my current draft,” said Palmer.
The head of the Balearic racing federation and mayor Jaume have already consulted Bernie Ecclestone and F1 event guru Philippe Gurdjian about this matter who is reportedly involved in this event’s support.
“Ecclestone was enthusiastic and encouraged us to pursue the project,” said federation president Agustin Arbex.
It would be interesting to see what the FIA says about this development in the near future and how the organisers decide to arrange this event by 2012.
