Mamma Kimbo gets a tough spot for her comeback race
Peachtree Stable’s 3-year-old filly, Mamma Kimbo, didn’t look in good shape when she last raced in the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes at Pimlico in May, going over 1 1/8 miles for the first time in 3 starts, as she finished fourth on the day.
She seemed tired and she was not herself in that race and trainer Bob Baffert decided to give her a break, and bring her back to the races in the fall. Now is the time for Mamma Kimbo’s comeback race.
“She lost a lot of weight and didn’t look good,” trainer Bob Baffert said.
The 3-year-old filly by Discreet Cat, Mamma Kimbo will have to shake off some rust before she gets back into graded stakes company, and for the trainer Bob Baffert has chosen $52,000 allowance race over six and one-half furlongs at Betfair Hollywood Park
on 29 November, 2012.
Mamma Kimbo will take the allowance race as a prep race before she runs in the Grade 1, $300,000 La Brea Stakes at Santa Anita Park on 26 December, 2012, which will be run over a distance of seven furlongs.
“She’s training well,” he said. “We’re getting her ready for the La Brea. She should run really well.”
Though, it mind sound like a soft spot for her comeback race, but in reality, Mamma Kimbo will have to go against a competent field of six, who all have either placed finishes in stakes races or have gone on to win them.
Successful in 2 of 3 starts, Mamma Kimbo beat maidens in her debut race over six furlongs at Santa Anita Park on 18 February, 2012, under jockey Martin Garcia, and then went on to cover the distance in 1 minute and 7.94 seconds on dirt.
She was then pointed at the Grade 2 Fantasy Stakes on 11 April, 2012, at Oaklawn Park, where she was stretched out in distance to 1 1/16 miles.
She defeated the likes of Amie’s Dini in second and Jemima’s Pearl in third, while she covered the 1 1/16 mile distance in 1 minute and 43.64 seconds before snapping her 2 race win streak in the Grade 2 Black-Eyes Susan Stakes.
