Mamma Kimbo presented Bob Baffert with another win at Oaklawn Park
The 3-year-old Peachtree Stable owned filly, Mamma Kimbo coupled with veteran Hall of Fame jockey, Mike Smith led at every call when she bagged the Grade 2, $300,000 Fantasy Stakes at about 1 1/16 miles on 11 April, 2012, over the Racing Festival of the
South at Oaklawn Park.
Sent off at 7 to 5 odds, Mamma Kimbo in only her second start broke from the rail well, but the second choice Amie’s Dini assumed the lead first after her swift break.
It didn’t take the Bob Baffert trained filly, Mamma Kimbo to snatch the lead back from Amie’s Dini, who finished as a runner up in the Grade 3 Honeybee Stakes.
The Kentucky bred daughter of Discreet Cat, out of mare Bag Lady Jane by Devil’s Bag, Mamma Kimbo gained a 2 length over Amie’s Dini, but the filly in second place was rampant and gave the impression that any point she would overhaul the leader.
However, Mamma Kimbo refused to give away and in the process carved brisk fractions, as she went the first quarter mile in 23.43 seconds, half mile in 46.77 seconds, and she went past the 6 furlong marker in 1 minute and 11.15 seconds.
Ron Moquett trained 3-yeqar-old dark bay filly, Amie’s Dini under jockey Jon Court made her move on the far turn and drew a little closer to Mamma Kimbo, but she couldn’t match strides with Mamma Kimbo in the drive as the filly opened the gap furthermore
and downed her rival by three quarters of a length under Smith’s urging.
Bob Baffert, who suffered a heart attack in Dubai couple of weeks back said it was a good therapy for the heart.
"That was good therapy for the heart,” he said of the Fantasy. “(Wife) Jill, (son) Bode, and I were having fish tacos overlooking Del Mar watching the race. We were in heaven. This is a nice filly. From her first start we gave her some time since the past
race and she delivered. You never know if they're going to hold on."
Amie’s Dini finished second while Mamma Kimbo’s stable mate, Jemima’s Pearl finished third in a field of seven.
