Mammoth Pakistan run chase underway at Lord’s
Pakistan have commenced the daunting, and some may say nigh on impossible, task of chasing down the 440-run target Australia have set them for victory in the Test match at Lord’s.
After beginning the day 205 runs in front of Pakistan, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shahid-Afridi-c2482’s team would have to score more runs in the fourth innings of a Test match than any previous Pakistan side had done before if they were to win the match.
It’s a target that is a full 99 runs higher than any fourth-innings total made by Pakistan in a Test, their 341-9 in a drawn Test against the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 Test team, the 315-9 that took them to victory against Australia in Karachi during November 2002.
With all that in mind, but in conditions that were starting to top in favour of the batsmen as the sun broke through and the outfield began to quicken, Pakistan began their chase with confidence.
Openers Salman Butt and Imran Farhat brought up their 50 partnership before debutant Steven Smith – who had not been handed the ball during Pakistan’s first innings – struck for his maiden Test wicket, as Farhat sought to find the boundary off a delivery that perhaps didn’t generate the expected turn and instead found http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Watson-c96326’s hands at midwicket.
At stumps, Pakistan had reached 114-1, with Butt notching his second half-century for the match along the way.
