Man United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes agents are to be blamed for player transfer problems
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney created chaos at Old Trafford when he announced that he wanted to leave the club. After two days of crisis meetings and negotiations, the club manager Sir Alex Ferguson finally managed to
convince his player to stay. Rooney said that the manager made him realize that this is where he belongs.
United managed Sir Alex Ferguson was glad that the whole issue was behind them now; the manager said that most of the blame of the whole situation lies with Rooney’s agent.
Ferguson was asked as to what were the reasons behind Rooney being so reluctant to sign a new contract. The manager said that it was not just the case of Rooney and admitted that most of the big players at United have issues that
need to be addressed. Fergie said that are all pretty much the same, but everyone needs to be handled differently. He said that when a big name player at the club is approaching the end of his contract, often the player’s agent comes up with some ridiculous
requirement which the club is expected to meet.
Ferguson said that in truth, it is never the players who have issues, but actually it is the agents that make them delusional. The manager went on to say that the player agents are not looking for just the benefit of their clients,
but in fact they are looking to make the biggest cut that they can make on deals.
The comments were obviously directed towards Wayne Rooney’s agent Paul Stretford. The remarks by the United boss came after his team finally managed to win away from home in the league this season. Red Devils beat Stoke City 2-1
courtesy 2 excellent goals from Javier Hernandez, and it was also a United team that did not have Wayne Rooney. While talking about the match, Ferguson said that the result was much needed and normally a match like this would have been a walk in the park for
his team. However, he admitted that looking at the way things have gone, it sure was a well-fought and well-earned win.
Traditionally, Manchester United has been a team that kick-start their season by Christmas time, but still if one is to take that into account, the start they have made this season has been their worst in the last 5 years.
"We have some important games between now and Christmas time and we have to make our mark in the league now," said Ferguson.
Ferguson admitted that he did fear that his team may drop points away from home yet again, but hailed the performance of his young Mexican wunderkind.
"When their goal went in you start to say to yourself, 'Is it going to be one of those seasons?' [But] Chicharito came up with the winner. He knows where the goal lies. The supporters' reaction was fantastic to the goal and our
players' reaction was fantastic.”
Sir Alex said that that is what his team has been known for over the years; he said that late goals have won his team many games in the past. He added that this sort of a win lifts the whole team and the fans at the same time.
The win, he added, was a big one and the monkey of a first away win is finally off United’s back.
Sir Alex, in the end, once again referred to the Wayne Rooney episode and reiterated that Wayne is the same player he was before the whole thing began. He reiterated that things like this happen all the time, and it is the right
of a player to have expectations from the club. He finished by saying that Rooney would once again win the fans back with his ability to score goals.
