Man United vs. Wolves: Ji-Sung Park scores injury-time winner for Manchester United
Manchester United left it till the 93rd minute to score the winner against Wolverhampton Wanderers through the stunning strike by Ji-Sung Park. The match also marked the 24th anniversary for Sir Alex Ferguson
at the Premier League side and the South Korean delivered a perfect present for the Scot. Owen Hargreaves started the match after a two-year absence from the game due to various injuries but his disappointment continued as he only lasted 5 minutes on the pitch
and left with a hamstring injury. He was a surprise inclusion in the first place.
Two goals from Park condemned Wolves a hard-earned point which they would have deserved. His first came in the last minute of 1st half when Darren Fletcher spotted a run from the South Korean in the penalty area unmarked
and the attacking midfielder didn’t make any mistake in sending the ball into the corner of the Stretford End net.
Trailing by one goal, Wolves manager Mick McCarthy had to make a double substitution to enforce some pressure on United and he was immediately rewarded when former United player Sylvan Ebanks-Blake struck from a close range to
equalize. The striker showed an excellent 1st touch and beat his marker Nemanja Vidic and shot between the legs of United keeper Edwin van der Sar.
After the Wolves’ equalizer, the Red Devils put a lot of pressure but McCarthy’s side defended quite well. The match looked destined for a draw until the South Korean scored an amazing goal in the last minute of injury time that
left the Wolves fans heartbroken and in tears. Had it not been the case, it would have cost United dearly as they were already five points behind and another draw could have put them even further away from the title race. Chelsea will play their match on Sunday
at Anfield against a resurgent Liverpool side and this win from United will certainly put some pressure on the Champions.
McCarthy could not have believed his luck as only a fortnight ago the Red Devils beat them in the last minute of the Carling Cup. It was, however, a disjointed performance from Ferguson’s team who were missing several key players
through injury. There was no Dimitar Berbatov, Wayne Rooney and Luis Nani, and in their absence, the team looked out of sorts. Only in the second half when the Scott introduced Paul Scholes and Federico Macheda was when the United team looked dangerous and
more likely to score. The veteran Scholes showed creativity and superb passing in his short stay on the pitch. He was the reason that the United team got momentum and put incredible pressure on the Wolves’ defence and it was not until the last minute of injury
time when the South Korean’s dazzling run though the opposition defence, cutting inside the area from the right wing, saw an opening on the near post and shot the ball past Wolves keeper Marcus Hahnemann. As the ball saw the back of the net, Old Trafford erupted
into joy. It was an unbelievable moment for United. Their ‘never say die’ attitude is what they are known for, and this moment is what the United Fans live to see.
