Man United’s Gary Neville announces immediate retirement from football
Manchester United’s legendary right back Gary Neville announced his retirement through a message on Manchester United’s official website. Neville, who has been sidelined through a persistent knee injury, has struggled on
the sidelines as younger players such as Rafael Da Silva have started at the right back berth for the Red Devils.
Neville was a part of Manchester United’s famous “Fergie’s Fledglings” group which came through the Manchester United academy in the 1996 Premier League season. Gary Neville last played for Manchester United in their away
fixture at the Hawthorns stadium in the English Premier League last year, but since then the veteran defender has not appeared in a competitive fixture for the Red Devils.
In the 2005-2006 season, Gary Neville was appointed as Manchester United’s club captain but Ferguson had to reconsider his decision soon after as the Englishman’s career was bogged down with frequent knee injuries and other
fitness problems. Manchester United’s fans have cherished Neville with all their might as he was one of the few remaining players at the club who came through the club’s youth academy during the 1990s. Neville was a prominent member of Manchester United’s
treble-winning side in 1999.
Manchester United fans will be disappointed with Neville’s retirement, as it has come unexpectedly to say the least. Despite the fact that the English defender had spent considerable time on the sidelines due to his injury
issues, Sir Alex Ferguson saw him as great leader for the club in the dressing room. However, it remains to be seen whether United will retain http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gary-Neville-c14447 in some sort of a coaching capacity.
Neville also accumulated a total of 85 caps for the English national team and played for the Three Lions in the 1998, 2002 and the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He made the right back spot in the English national team his own but
then faded away from international football following his fitness troubles. In a recent interview on Manchester United’s official website, Neville said, "I have been a Manchester United fan all my life and fulfilled every dream I've ever had. Obviously I am
disappointed that my playing days are at an end, however it comes to us all, and it's knowing when that time is and for me that time is now."
He went on to thank Sir Alex Ferguson for backing him through tough times in his career and also expressed his happiness on winning several trophies with Manchester United whilst playing alongside the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-Beckham-c10432,
