Man arrested in police investigation regarding London 2012 Olympics tickets
A man has recently been arrested in Brent, London for allegedly offering to illegally sell London 2012 Olympics tickets.
The information regarding the illegal activity was relayed to the police by the organisers of the Olympics games. They had detected the abnormal activity by observing the traffic going to their official ticket website. The 23-year-old man accused of the
fraud was supposedly making use of social networking sites to attract surfers interested in buying tickets for the prestigious sports event.
Nick Downing, who is the Detective Chief Inspector, made the following statements regarding the issue: "As we have all seen, there has been a huge demand for tickets to see this world-class sporting spectacle, and unfortunately criminals will be looking
for every opportunity to exploit this. We will be looking to use the London Olympic and Paralympic Games Act 2006, and existing police powers, wherever appropriate, to stop those who seek to make money from genuine fans through fake websites and other ticket
scams.”
According to Locog, the official sponsor of the international sports event, people who have bought or will buy the tickets are allowed to sell them to friends and family. However, this does not mean that they should be making a profit out of the sale. Any
profiteering activity on the sale of the Olympic tickets is considered illegal.
The illegal activity related to the London 2012 Olympics is expected because millions of people are willing to attend the event next year but there are not enough spaces to accommodate all the fans. Criminals are tempted to make money by exploiting the huge
amount of people whose applications have not been entertained in both the first as well as the second round of ticket sales.
In the first round of ticket sales, a total of 1.2 million could not get their hands on the tickets despite having filled out the application. Likewise, about 20,000 people were unsuccessful in getting a hold of the tickets in the second window that is still
open and is going to remain open till the 3rd of July.
After the window closes, those interested in buying the tickets for the event will get another chance next year.
