Manager, Terry Francona keeps losing start in mind as Boston Red Sox look to crawl out of slump
Boston Red Sox manager, Terry Francona got a chance to interact with the press before Tuesday’s game with the Cleveland Indians. Apart from the fact that the club has a weaker standing in the American League East region, the skipper was informed of another
grave statistic - No team that gets off to a 0 – 4 start in the season, has gone to the World Series to win the ultimate trophy.
The only team that came very close was the St. Louis Cardinals in 1985, when they went up against the Kansas City Royals in the tournament in seven games. Francona is not keen to check up on statistics at the moment. The only time he plans to do so is after
his club starts winning.
"No, I haven't turned on the television," Francona said. "I never watch ‘SportsCenter’ when we're not winning. I can't help it. I never have."
Francona is well suited for situations like these, and there is a great understanding of the skipper who has helped Boston through volatile conditions since 2004.
"I hope I deal with it the same, because that's the whole idea, is being consistent," said Francona. "Regardless of what my personality is, or the coaches, if we don't maintain some consistency, I think that's going to send a red flag out of the clubhouse.
I think that's the best thing we can do, is just be consistent. The players know we want to win. I know they want to win."
Francona believes that a 0 – 4 start is not an easy reading to begin the new season with. He further told the press that it is true, all thirty teams tend to go through long losing streaks in their respective seasons.
He elaborated that teams tend to get over-evaluated in the first two weeks of the season, as was discussed in a meeting recently. He concluded that despite all that has transpired in the season, he wishes the team starts doing better and soon. At the end
of the day, one just has to deal with the situation.
