Bo Porter, the Houston Astros recently appointed manager is participating in the annual winter CAREavan along with former Astros greats Jimmy Wynn, J.R. Richard and pitcher Wesley Right. The event started on Monday, January 19 on the occasion of 19th
annual MLK Day Grande Parade which took place in midtown, Houston.
Porter said that he is a guy who remembers history and said there have been some great names in the history from Martin Luther King to Jackie Robinson. He said that these people made a difference and being an African American, he appreciates their efforts
as their sacrifices made the many made opportunities possible for many.
"I'm a history guy as well," Porter said. "Whenever you look at the history, from Martin Luther King to Jackie Robinson, those are all momentous movements in our country. And yes, being African American it goes back to appreciating those that have come before
you and the sacrifice they made to give you the different opportunities you may have today.”
This is not the first time the Bo Porter has been involved in philanthropic work and has previously taken part in similar endeavours after becoming the manager of the Houston ball club. Porter took part in a charity softball event that was organised by VetSports.
The coach will soon be leaving for Spring Training in Florida. He certainly has a lot to do considering that his team will be under pressure joining the highly competitive American League West and coming of two consecutive seasons with hundred plus defeats
each.
Bo was wearing Astros blue and orange jersey at the event and was friendly towards the fans. He said that it was an honour to be able to stand as an Astros manager.
He was also pleased with support shown by the fans who chanted slogans in favour of the team. The manager believed that it was an opportunity to bond with the fans.
“As we were driving along the parade, you hear fans yelling 'Go Astros!'" he said. "I would like to have more fans out there, but we appreciate the fans that were out there. It allows us to connect with the fans.”
The group also spoke to kids on the occasion and held a mini clinic on the field. They bid the youngsters adieu along with their autographs.
It is great to see that baseball community is actively participating in good causes and it is a lesson for other players and celebrities to learn from and act upon.
One hopes that the Houston Astros and manager Bo Porter both have an excellent 2013 season. The Astros are a young team that is currently going through a rebuilding phase. One hopes that they will be able to perform better under the new manager in a completely
new league.
