Manager Bob Melvin to stay in Oakland with two year contract extension – MLB News
After taking the Oakland Athletics to the top of the American League West Division during the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season manager Bob Melvin has been given a two year contract extension.
It looks like the Athletics are happy with Melvin as not only did he take the team to the top of the AL West Division, but he managed to do it on a shoe-string budget of $59.5 million. This figure was considered to be the lowest in the Major League.
''I was excited and impressed when Billy told me that Bob was available and accepting the manager role with us,'' owner Lew Wolff said. ''As I observed Bob's leadership and very special drive, I was even more impressed with Billy's choice. I am so very pleased
that we will have Bob with us for the foreseeable future. Bob's use of our talent was and is brilliant in my opinion.''
Melvin is happy at the fact that he is already from the area and has a lot of local contacts in the area. For him it is basically like sitting at home while managing the Athletics. ''To get an extension like this from people you respect and admire and supported
you, it really makes you feel good and makes you feel better about doing your job,'' said Melvin.
Oakland Athletics impressed everyone with their tremendous season. Unfortunately they were unable to get past the Detroit Tigers in the AL Division Series. However, all was not lost as the team managed to finish on top of the AL West Division and turn many
heads.
Most of the credit goes to Melvin for his tremendous managing skills and taking players like Yoenis Cespedes to new heights. Melvin seems to understand the strengths of his players and allows them to play their natural game. It is no wonder why he was voted
as AL Manager of the Year.
It will be interesting to see the Athletics come out swinging as Spring Training is right around the corner. The fans will be hoping the team can repeat their tremendous performance of the 2012 season and quite possibly go all the way to the World Series.
