Manager Chubby Chandler blames putting coach for Lee Westwood’s loss at the Masters
The International Sports Management executive Chubby Chandler didn’t mince words while laying an outright blame on Lee Westwood’s loss at the Masters on his putting coach Phil Kenyon.
Despite pulling in a strong joint third finish at his 13th appearance at the coveted event, Westwood was not happy with his short game and vowed to return to chase the elusive title next year.
Chandler was also upbeat about Westwood’s strong performance and commended his mental composure in the overall proceedings of the event.
Chandler said, "I've never seen him more upbeat after coming close in a major. I thought he would be disappointed, but he said, 'I played great'. In fact, tee-to-green it's probably the best he played in the majors. He has just got to hang in there till
he has a good week putting and then he won't just win a major but win by a few. I think once he's knocked one off, he'll knock off another pretty quickly”.
For the moment, Kenyon will be facing the music both from Westwood as well as Chandler.
Chandler took a jab at the putting guru and said:
"I don't know how much difference he has made – I don't think he has made any”.
Regardless of Chandler’s outburst against Kenyon, Westwood’s playing stats showed a remarkable improvement as compared to his previous record at Augusta National.
The Englishman led the Greens in Regulation, pulling in no fewer than 58 out of 72 and carded the highest number of birdies 20 in the 72-hole stretch.
Soaring to the top of the leaderboard on the opening day of the event, it was more than evident that Westwood meant business this time around.
His closing rounds over the weekend, didn’t help him much to maintain his charge and clinch his first green jacket of his otherwise stellar career.
Westwood won two professional titles last year, including the Ballantine’s Championship in Korea and successfully defended his title at the Nedbank Golf Challenge.
Known for his penchant for the Asian Tour, Westwood will be relying heavily on his bids on the Asian Tour, hoping to stay on top of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) in the current season.
