Manager: Georges St-Pierre planning eventual move up to middleweight

Canadian welterweight mixed martial artist Georges “Rush” St-Pierre has already beaten the best that the 170lb division has to offer, having won the Ultimate Fighting Championships welterweight title twice
and successfully defended it four times in a row. He’s been so successful his manager, Shari Spencer, told Tapology that he’s planning to move up to middleweight (185lb.)

"I think it’s inevitable; I just think it’s a matter of when," Spencer said. "When and if Georges decides to move up, it will be a permanent move and I think that is what’s difficult to ascertain regarding
the timing of the move."

St-Pierre had previously been reticent about moving up because he noted he had a lot of friends he’d refuse to fight in the middleweight division, including Nate Marquardt, currently the number three ranked
middleweight according to the current USA Today/SBNation.com rankings.

Fans have been clamouring for a superfight between St-Pierre and long-time UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, generally considered the two best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport. Both fighters
have largely cleaned out their divisions, with Silva having had seven successful title defences, and with St-Pierre not having lost a round since 2007.

Spencer also explained to Tapology that St-Pierre’s incredible self-discipline and motivation was what allowed him to dominate his title challengers so thoroughly, with that same motivation impelling him
to seek new challengers in a heavier weight class.

"He takes everybody just as seriously. People get bored of him saying, ‘This is the toughest fight of my life’ in all of his interviews, but he really does believe that or he has to believe that to be motivated.
In the future, I think there is a risk there, but I think there is enough discussion about him moving up in weight, and that would obviously create new challenges," said Spencer.
