Manager says Jose Aldo should fight for UFC lightweight title
After World Extreme Cagefighting featherweight (145lb) champion Jose Aldo destroyed number one contender Manvel Gamburyan at WEC 51 last Thursday, fans began calling for a potential superfight
between Aldo and Ultimate Fighting Championships lightweight (155lb) champion Frankie Edgar.
Now Aldo’s manager, Ed Soares, has revealed he thinks his fighter should also be fighting against the UFC champion.
“I think a dream fight for him, which I think would just be a fight that everyone would love to see, would be Frankie Edgar vs. Jose Aldo,” Soares told mmafighting.com.
Although Edgar and Aldo fight in two different promotions, it isn’t a far-fetched idea. Both the WEC and UFC are owned by the same parent company, and while the WEC does possess a lightweight
division Aldo could fight in, the UFC is seen has having a far superior lightweight division. The WEC’s status means Aldo is considered far and away the best featherweight in the world.
“That fight to me is the fight that everybody would want to see simply just because, not to disrespect anybody at the 155-pound division to think that Jose has the right to go up there without
fighting in it, I just think that, as their styles, the way they match up, it would be one of the greatest fights of all-time, I think,” said Soares.
Aldo is known for possessing some of the deadliest Muay Thai in the mixed martial arts world, which he’s used to finish seven of his eight opponents in the WEC. Edgar, on the other hand,
is a wrestler with good boxing, meaning the fight would likely come down to whether Aldo could batter Edgar on his feet or whether Edgar could hold him down.
At present however, Edgar has an upcoming title defence against Gray Maynard that he’ll have to get through. Aldo’s next challenger has not been named.
